MALSCH, Germany, and SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Sunrise Medical has acquired Spinergy, a brand of high-performance wheels for active manual wheelchairs, with plans to support the company’s next phase of growth.

Founded in 1990 and headquartered in San Marcos, Calif., Spinergy designs and manufactures premium wheels and bespoke carbon fiber components for manual wheelchairs, with manufacturing operations in Tijuana, Mexico.

“Spinergy is an iconic name in active mobility, with a reputation that reaches from everyday riders to the world’s finest wheelchair athletes,” said Thomas Babacan, president and CEO. “We are delighted to welcome the team and invest in the next chapter of this exceptional business. Our ambition is to give Spinergy the resources to innovate, grow and better serve its customers and the riders who rely on its products, while preserving the independence and entrepreneurial spirit that have made it so successful.”

Spinergy will continue to operate independently within the Sunrise Medical Group, retaining its brand and its entire organization and team and continuing its long-standing relationships with wheelchair manufacturers, distributors and users.

Going forward, Sunrise Medical will support Spinergy’s growth through further product development, enhanced customer support and broader market reach, with the shared goal of building on Spinergy’s expertise in performance wheels and bespoke carbon fiber design and manufacturing and bringing new innovations and greater choice to riders worldwide.

“I have devoted more than 30 years to building Spinergy alongside a team that shares my passion for making exceptional products,” said Marty Connolly, president of Spinergy. “With Sunrise Medical’s support, we can take that work further while staying true to our brand, our people and our commitments to customers. I am excited about what we can achieve together.”
