BALTIMORE - The PECOS edits are scheduled to go into effect today. July 3, 2013HME News Staff

WASHINGTON - Bad data is preventing CMS from collecting “currently not collectible” overpayments, according to a report from the Office of Inspector General (OIG). CMS reported $543 million in new “currently not collectible” overpayments across all contractors for fiscal year 2010, but it provided detailed information on $69 million “currently not collectible” overpayments for only seven contractors. Scooter Store: 'Whatever is going on is not good for our industry'

June 8, 2012Elizabeth Deprey

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas - What's behind all the recent changes at The Scooter Store? So far, the company, one of two top providers of power wheelchairs in the country, has been tight-lipped. Mark Leita, vice president of external relations and government affairs, provided the same statement to HME News that he provided to The San Antonio Express-News. The newspaper in May reported several top execs had left the company. "The Scooter Store is taking efforts to streamline the executive leadership...

April 23, 2012Elizabeth Deprey

No sooner had word spread that Doug Harrison had stepped down as CEO of The Scooter Store, than industry sources began to speculate on whether investor Sun Capital was behind the move. Here's what a couple had to say:•“They've been under a lot of pressure in a market that's just the dogs of the industry right now,” says Don Davis, a financial consultant with Duckridge Advisors. “It has to be a very difficult situation for a player of their size. Reader: 'Nice job, Mr. Harrison, of looking out for our industry'

January 13, 2010Liz Beaulieu, Editor

We continue to get heated feedback from our TV interview and our subsequent story in the January issue with Doug Harrison, CEO and president of The Scooter Store. First, we heard from "Angry Man." Today, we heard from a reader out in California. He sent us this letter to the editor: Dear HME Editor: I read with great curiosity the article in the January edition regard the Scooter Store, and Mr. Harrison's various and obviously unrestrained and not fully thought out comments. I am still shaking my...

Angry Man tees off on The Scooter Store and HME News

December 4, 2009Mike Moran

Every now and then, some really irate person calls, emails or writes HME News and goes ballistic. To tell you the truth, I like hearing from Angry Man or Angry Woman because it usually indicates that we've struck a nerve. In this business, that's always fun, provided you've reported a factual, unbiased story, expressed an honest opinion or supplied important information. That happened earlier this week, when Angry Man emailed me to complain about an interview we ran on HME News TV with Scooter Store...

Heyday for power wheelchairs, like stocks and houses, may be O-V-A

November 30, 2009Liz Beaulieu, Editor

I have a feeling, with 552 views, that the HME News TV interview with Doug Harrison is making the rounds. I'm not surprised. Harrison, CEO and president of The Scooter Store, is no Pollyana, so what he has to say can be either a breathe of fresh air or a lightening rod. Take, for example, what Harrison has to say about the prospects of future reductions to power wheelchair reimbursement: At some point, Medicare's not going to pay $4,000 for a power wheelchair," he said. "They're going to pay $2,000....
