OIG report on catheters: ‘Where are they getting their information?’

YARMOUTH, Maine – An Office of Inspector General report “understates” the actual cost of providing catheters, especially given the complexity of both Medicare’s documentation requirements and the needs of patients, say providers.
The report, released in September, found that Medicare payments for intermittent urinary catheters were 3.4 times supplier acquisition costs in fiscal year 2020 and recommended that CMS lower its reimbursement rates.

WASHINGTON - The Office of Inspector General (OIG) wants Hoveround to pay back the federal government $27 million for power mobility devices that it says do not meet Medicare reimbursement requirements.The OIG audited claims for 200 randomly selected beneficiaries who received PMDs from the direct-to-consumer manufacturer in 2010 and found 154 did not meet Medicare requirements. The reports will feature tables, graphs and an explanation of findings comparing billing and payment patterns in states across the nation, according to a bulletin from CMS.
