Q: I keep hearing about AI search and answer engines. What does that actually mean for how patients and referral sources find my CGM business?
A: Most people are familiar with search engine optimization (SEO), the practice of making your website show up in Google search results. There is a newer concept worth understanding: AEO, or answer engine optimization. For CGM providers, it is quickly becoming just as important.
Here is the difference. When someone types a question into Google, they get a list of links. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or another AI tool the same question, they get a synthesized answer first. Unlike a traditional search that returns a list of links, AI tools synthesize information and lead with a direct answer. AEO ensures your business, services and expertise are included in that answer.
Why it matters now
Patients, family members and referral sources are increasingly turning to AI tools to answer their questions. Which DME providers offer CGM in my area? What should I look for when choosing a home medical equipment company? If your digital presence is not structured in a way that AI can read and reference, you may be invisible in those answers entirely.
What you can do
The good news is that the basics are actionable. Start with your website FAQ page. Write it in plain language that directly answers the questions your patients and referral sources are asking. Be explicit about every product category you carry, every brand you offer and every geographic area you serve. AI tools rely on clear, explicit information and will not fill in gaps about your service areas or product lines.
Keep your Google Business Profile complete and accurate. AI tools depend on it heavily. Earn credible mentions through industry directories, association memberships and local coverage. Stay active on social media, as consistent posting contributes to your overall digital footprint.
AEO does not replace SEO. It builds on it. Providers who get ahead of this now will have a real advantage as AI-driven search continues to grow.
